Big Rocket 'Snap'

Hi Sian - no problem - answers below....

>

> Shot’?

We do sometimes use images 'as shot', however we see no problem is
sensible re-touching. We're not massive fans of overly manipulated
photographic imagery, but re-touching is an important element of the
process.

>

> style much?

We have lots of influences - from some of the well known names (August
Sander, Stephen Gill, Bill Brandt, Avedon, Tony Ray-Jones) to just
keeping up to date with current styles, trends, etc in magazines &
advertising.

>
> Where do the majority of your ideas come from?

Big Rocket is a team of two photographers so ideas are discussed,
argued, disagreed, agreed & sometimes shot.

>

Don't be shy. If you want to get the image, you're going to have to
approach people. Simple as that. If you're polite to people, the worst
thing they'll say is 'no'. Be clear and concise & explain what you're
doing...and be honest. Nobody wants to look like a chump. Smiling also
helps.

>

> type of person you particularly like to photograph?

Not really, we try to get the most out of every person that we shoot -
often this is tricky, often not.

>
> Is there any part of photography you dislike?

Andreas Gursky / Dusseldorf school copy-cats. And Martin parr rip-offs.
Paps. Crap celebrity magazines. People who shoot with gold cameras.
Perou.

>

> in a darkroom (if you ever did?!)?

All digital now. Although we trained in a darkroom.

>
> Do you ever have photographers block? And if so, how do you deal with
> it?

Yes. Pint of beer.

>
> What do you consider your greatest achievements in your career to date?

Nelson Mandela portrait last year was special. And a Creative Review
'best in book' award.

>
> What would you have done differently during your photography career so
> far and could you use this as advice to others?

Ask photography colleges to teach students the business side of things
before graduation. And warn them how hard it is. More photographers in
London than black cabbies, etc..

>
> Do you have any major projects in the pipeline? If so, what are they?

We've an exhibition coming up in April - send us your address & we'll
pop an invite in the post.

>
> Do you have any suggestions for someone who wants to do what you do?

Be committed to it - if you're a bit flaky, you won't last. And be
adaptable.

Hope this helps!

Hi Sian,

Many thanks for the kind words - much appreciated.

We'd be happy to help - be good if you could draft some q's for us to
answer directly. Alternatively, we're presenting our work at The
Photographers Gallery on Thursday evening, with a Q&A, although it may
be a bit far to come from Leeds!

Looking forward to hearing from you,
